Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum Big White Pot and Red/White Vase by Hella Jongerius

Using 14th century shards from the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum in Rotterdam, Hella Jongerius has initiated a post-modern restoration project.  The basis of her work form archetypal vases and pots into which an old shard was glued with tow-component plastic.  Parts of the vase are painted in bright colours, so unifying old and new.  Two items from this series have been given an industrial sequel.  The molding joints are clearly visible, as if the pieces were formed from several elements.  In accordance with a medieval tradition, these vases have been given a seal bearing the maker's thumbprint.  One of the vases is partly painted red in car lacquer.  This contemporary boldness is a badinage on glazing traditions in pottery.  The vases are made of porcelain.
